Fletch contributed to the delivery of Wurriki Nyal Civic Precinct, a landmark civic development for the City of Greater Geelong that brings together staff from seven council locations into a single, future-focused workplace. Named from Wadawurrung words meaning "speak and talk together", the six-storey building was designed to foster collaboration, enhance community connection and support the city's long-term operational needs.

A standout feature of the project is its innovative mass timber structure, incorporating Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and laminated timber elements throughout the upper levels of the building. Alongside modern workplace accommodation, the precinct includes active public spaces, co-working areas, retail and hospitality tenancies, end-of-trip facilities and community-focused amenities, creating a vibrant destination within the Geelong CBD.

Key Challenges

  • Delivering a complex mass timber building using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) construction

  • Coordinating structural timber, steel and building services within a highly integrated design

  • Construction within a busy CBD environment with significant pedestrian and traffic interfaces

  • Extensive stakeholder and community engagement throughout design and delivery

  • Managing early design approvals and procurement for internationally sourced timber materials

  • Maintaining safety and logistics within a constrained urban site

  • Achieving ambitious sustainability and social procurement targets

Outcome

A highly sustainable civic workplace that has become a defining addition to Geelong's city centre. Combining innovative timber construction, community-focused design and leading environmental outcomes, the project provides a modern workplace for the City of Greater Geelong while supporting local employment, Indigenous engagement and regional economic growth. The completed facility delivers a flexible, low-carbon and future-ready civic precinct that will serve the community for decades to come.
